About Me

Annie Decamp’s mixed media work begins with research into late 19th and mid-20th century black and white photographs. She typically paints from those photographs using charcoal, oil, and encaustic, or alters them digitally before painting onto them with the same materials. This results in a body of work that is intricate and highly layered due to the multitude of steps and mediums used. This process and mixture of mediums speak to the complexity of human nature and ontology as well as the many layers of the human story. Decamp uses symbolism in her work to tell stories or illustrate how connected we are to the lives of others or to show how little we know about the truth of others, particularly in the digital age. The diversity of themes she surveys fulfills her desire to be closer to humanity and have a deeper understanding of history and human survival. Simultaneously, this empowers her to consider topics that illuminate her ability to see irony and wit that are ubiquitous throughout our shared mortal experience.

Decamp was born in Denver, Colorado. After spending a year as a child on a Native American reservation near Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, while her father did a residency at a local hospital, her family relocated to Palo Alto, CA where she grew up. Decamp studied history and art history at UC Berkeley where she earned her B.A. For several years she worked in technology before going into business and marketing consulting and landed a job building and managing a website for Francis Coppola’s chateau and winery in Rutherford, CA. During this time she began painting and began work in jewelry design. She launched a successful jewelry design business and flagship store in Palo Alto that she ran for 15 years before returning to painting full-time. Decamp teaches traditional drawing and painting courses out of her Denver studio and has been asked to be a guest teacher at local schools. In 2002 she launched an outdoor art show featuring a number of her artist friends that move throughout Denver neighborhoods. This has been a way to help artists show their work when most shows were canceled during the pandemic. The success of this show has grown and received accolades from local media.Decamp regularly shows in galleries and museums throughout Colorado including the Colorado Snow Sports Museum, Red Brick Center for the Arts in Aspen (where she has also curated shows), and the A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art.
